Man drowns in canals

It is believed the man went swimming in the canal after leaving the Cape2Cairo nightclub.

An Umkomaas man drowned in the canals near Ushaka Marine World on Sunday morning, 10 October.

“An inquest was opened at Point police station after a man drowned at the Point area,” said Lt Col Zwane of the SAPS KZN media centre.

“The deceased is about 25-years-old and is from the Umkomaas area.

He was swimming when he had difficulties and allegedly drowned.”

Police divers from the Durban and Port Shepstone Search and Rescue Unit were called out to the canals below The Quays apartment block.

It is believed the man went swimming in the canal after leaving the Cape2Cairo nightclub.

Police said upon their arrival, several witnesses from the apartment block pointed out where the man was last seen.

A resident had attempted to search for him, with no success.

A dive operation was conducted and the body was recovered from the canal at a depth of three metres.
