Gardening guard puts his green fingers to work

He has already reaped and enjoyed the spinach he planted.

Not content with only safeguarding the SUN staff, a Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) guard has taken the initiative to beautify the newspaper’s garden.

Petrus Myeza decided to clear the SUN’s flower beds of weeds and plant vegetables in September.

“I did it just for fun and to make the garden more beautiful,” said Petrus, who has been stationed at the SUN’s premises for about two years.

He has planted successful veggie gardens at his home in Malagazi and gardening is one of his loves.

After being donated a bag of potting soil, Petrus set to work and cleared flowering beds in the front and on the side of the SUN’s property in Doonside and planted seeds he purchased in Isipingo.

It wasn’t long before the beetroot, carrots, green peppers, tomatoes, lettuce and spinach he had planted started blooming.

This was partly from the abundant rain Toti has been blessed with of late, but moreso from the guard’s green fingers.

He has already reaped and enjoyed the spinach he planted.

“The rest should be ready to eat in December and that I will share with the SUN staff members,” said Petrus.
