N2 sinkhole repair Santa’s gift to Toti

Gabion baskets are being installed to lend further support and stability to the structure.

During a site meeting at the sinkhole on the N2 southbound on Wednesday, 7 December, engineers confirmed the sides of the hole and the lower end within the water table were stabilised and re-instatement had commenced.

The steel joint between the new and old tunnel was installed on Wednesday. Thereafter it was sealed and layered with compacted sand and bedrock.

Gabion baskets are being installed to lend further support and stability to the structure.

“All materials were confirmed on order and the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) remains committed to declaring the road safe and passable by 22 December, weather permitting,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge, who has been keeping a close eye on the progress.

“Contractors are working a seven-day week with overtime in their endeavour to get the road completed in time, if not before.

The ideal would have been to have it completed in time for the festive season rush that is set to start this weekend, but we would rather it be safe than sorry, so a little more patience and we should be there.”
