Don your gloves at Clean Surf Project’s phase two clean up

Local NGO, Clean Surf Project (CSP) will host its second phase clean-up at Winklespruit beach this Saturday, 26 August.

LOCAL NGO, Clean Surf Project (CSP) will host its second phase clean-up at Winklespruit beach this Saturday, 26 August.
Organisers will tackle a greater stretch this time, cleaning both North and South of Winklespruit beach.

The clean-up commences at 8am at Winklespruit beach.

“We would like to have a group walking on the beach from Illovo River towards Winkle beach, as well as a group walking from Warner Beach to Winkle,” explained the NGO’s Denzil van der Westhuizen. “The Subway Beach stretch doesn’t look too bad, but the Illovo stretch has quite a lot of litter.”

Denzil explained that CSP aims to drop participants off at the two different beaches, where they could make their way towards Winkle, cleaning as they go.

The first phase of CSP’s Winkle Beach clean-up on Saturday, 5 August was a great success. Efforts were pooled from all sectors of the community, resulting in that stretch of the beach and rocks being left spotless.

Present at the last clean-up were fire fighters who used their expertise and equipment to spray down the Winkle rocks, Sapphire Coast Tourism, beach manager Jace Govender who assisted in planning, Cllr Andre Beetge, law enforcement and CCPO who patrolled the area, Winkle Lifesaving Club which hosted and many members of the community who tackled the tedious task.

Some 25 bags filled with litter were picked up in the 500-metre stretch of coastline. Two of these bags were filled solely with fishing line that was flushed out from between the rocks with the fire hose.

These 25 bags of litter would have been otherwise washed into the ocean had the clean-up not taken place.

CSP’s Denzil van der Westhuizen and Evan Geldenhuys invite the community to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in this Saturday, to create a healthier and happier environment for all beach lovers, ocean life included. A reminder that both bags and plastic gloves will be supplied.

Follow the Facebook page at Clean Surf Project, where the dates of future clean-ups and progress reports will be posted. For more information call Denzil on 082-802-3353.
