AFTER the successful International Coastal Clean-up that took place last weekend, the community is urged to continue the upliftment of the town by taking part in a street clean-up of Kingsway this Saturday, 22 September.
The clean-up will start at Warner Beach Prep’s senior campus and end at Pick ‘n Pay Kingsburgh, and run from 8am until 10am.

The month of September marks not only clean-up of the oceans and beaches, but of all areas. Residents are urged to take pride in their gardens, verges, streets and public parks too. Last Saturday’s coastal clean-up saw the following number of bags from the respective beaches: Umbogintwini 327, Amanzimtoti promenade, river mouth and Chain rocks 65, Warner beach 25, Winklespruit 23 and Illanda Wilds and Hutchison park 60.

Great fun was had as parents worked alongside their children, some in their school or scout uniform, environmental groups, tourism, sponsors, municipal departments and members of the public who all joined forces to rid the local beaches of litter.
“The main causes of pollution found on the beaches were polystyrene take away containers, plastic straws, bottle caps and ear buds,” explained Cllr Beetge. “In an effort to reduce waste in the future, businesses are encouraged to use cardboard and brown paper bags for take away containers, and to use paper straws as opposed to plastic straws.”
This Saturday the Kingsway stretch in Warner Beach will be the area of focus as all those caring about the area they live in will join forces to see the strip cleaned up.
The Ethekwini Municipality, DSW, Sapphire Coast Tourism and Clean Surf Project are parties partaking in the event. Those attending should wear closed shoes, bring their own gloves, long rakes or pitch forks, petrol bush cutters and slashers.
See the below four meeting points with their respective coordinators, who will be wearing blue Sapphire Coast Tourism shirts, will brief participants, hand out and collect data sheets and answer queries:
