Mambas cycle strenuous Karkloof trails track
This race sports plenty of well designed track that puts any rider to the test.
A beautiful, if chilly sunrise greeted the Amanzimtoti Cycle Club mambas who made the trip to the stunning Karkloof trails to take part in the 2019 compendium MTB race hosted by Burg Wheelers.
The riders were promised new routes over some of the best mountain biking terrain in the country, with an extra 5km on the normal 40km and 20km routes and minor changes to the 10km route.
There was no stopping Shelley Higgo as she crossed the finishing line to be the first woman home in the 45km event. Caryn Harvey continues to shine and stood proud for coming first in her age category and her husband, Gavin Harvey, had a big smile on his dial for coming third in his age category. Carl Freyer did amazingly well considering his rear jockey wheel jammed solid for several minutes, went over his handlebars on a steep descent and still found time to be the true gentleman he always is to help a woman with her puncture. Despite all these setbacks, he still managed to come third in his age category.
“From the enthusiastic, friendly Burg Wheelers team out on the course, exceptionally well-marked course, super fun and exciting route to the fantastic prize-giving with loads of lucky prizes, the day was phenomenal,” said Caryn.
“This race sports plenty of well designed track that puts any rider to the test. There was quite a bit of uphill track through the forest, but the hard work was well worth it once the roller coaster like downhill enduro track was hit. For anyone who enjoys riding track, this race is the one to enter,” she said.
Some good news in that the cycling club had a work party on Saturday afternoon, 13 July and managed to clear away enough sand, debris and refuse to resurrect the original 3km track around Hutchinson Park. Sunday, 14 July saw the first group of riders trying out the track which was great to see. For more information about the cycling club, visit their website on www.amanzimtoticycle.co.za.
