ETHEKWINI Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Directorate is set to partner with two specialist companies to test technologies aimed at detecting water leaks and reducing non-revenue water.

The matter was tabled at the municipality’s Executive Committee (Exco) meeting on August 26, where members considered a report seeking approval for memoranda of agreement with two companies to conduct pilot projects aimed at identifying opportunities to reduce water losses. Exco approved the recommendation, allowing the pilot projects to proceed.

Municipality spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said the projects would focus on detecting hidden and underground water leaks and assessing the condition of selected water pipelines to identify potential problems before they result in failures.

“These technologies will allow the municipality to assess their effectiveness and practicality before considering wider implementation. The pilot projects will also provide information to support future decisions on reducing water losses and investing in water infrastructure,” said Mzila.

This comes as eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba conducted a site inspection on August 31 to assess progress in repairing a leak along the Southern Aqueduct that has significantly affected water supplies to the city’s southern regions. The affected areas include Folweni, Nsimbini, Chatsworth, and Umlazi.
