Cops injured in shoot-out on N2
A SHOOT-OUT on the N2 last Wednesday at around lunch-time, left one man dead and two NPA officers injured.
Motorists drove by unaware of the drama. Three men with AK-47s came out of the bushes near the Umfume turnoff and fired wildly at officers Daan de Wet and Hans Schlebusch, who were speed-timing on the centre median. “It was like cops and robbers, and there was blood all around,” said Schlebusch. “We narrowly escaped death.” The two officers were sitting on the crash barrier when they heard automatic gunfire.
Mayor involved in assault charge
A CHARGE of assault has been laid against Toti’s mayor, Tony Penfold.
The mayor has, in turn, laid a charge against Ivor Johnson of Amanzi flats. Charges follow an altercation on Saturday in the foyer of Amanzi on Beach Road. According to a police spokesman, an argument ensued following a dispute over a mop. Penfold’s company administers the holiday pool for Amanzi.
Daring daylight robbery
A TOTI resident was shot and more than R3 000 stolen in a daring daylight robbery by two men at the Toti Bowling Club on Friday morning.
At about 8.30am, Bob Southey, Tom Anderson and Gerald Gordon-Hughes were behind the bar counting money. Jimmy During and Basil Robertson were on the other side of the bar when two men quietly slipped in behind them, one carrying a .22 pistol and the other a long knife. “This is a robbery, everyone sleep,” said the man with the gun.
Late-night heist
A MAPLE Road family was robbed while asleep last week and the intruders took the bedspreads form their beds without disturbing the family.
Other items taken in the burglary included a handbag and video machine. Police said the burglars gained entry through louvre windows. “We appeal to members of the public to ensure that burglar guards are installed where there are louvre windows. We also caution people who are building homes not to include louvres in their plans unless they are well protected,” said a police spokesman.
