Policeman dies in car crash
A SCOTTBURGH policeman was killed, and another injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling rolled down an embankment on Kingsway.
William Coetzee was declared dead on arrival at hospital, while Brendan Rensberg was admitted to Kingsway for treatment. The vehicle apparently went out of control near Toti railway station. It rolled down the embankment, trapping the two off duty policemen. Toti firemen used hydraulic equipment to free the two men.
Levy blow for pensioners
A LEVY increase of 27,4 per cent, without prior notice, is what residents at Impala Park retirement village are faced with.
Residents were informed of the increase on the day it was to become effective. The newsletter received by residents from the management committee read, “Following on the six-monthly review of our 1995/6 levy accounts, it has been found necessary to increase our monthly levies with immediate effect”.
Promenade lights
THE long wait for improved lighting along Toti’s promenade has ended at last.
Manager of Albatros Flats and spokesman for flat owners and residents, Fred Lewis said, “After seven years of asking, we seem to have contacted the right person. Now our residents and holidaymakers can use the promenade at night and feel a bit safer than before”.
Chester finds lost firearm
CHESTER the gun sniffing Staffie had his first success when he discovered a firearm at the scene of an accident at the weekend.
A bakkie with five passengers rolled on the N2 near Kingsway High on Sunday, at about 6pm and a firearm was lost. The area was searched but the firearm was not found. Police reservist, Cpt Dean Hennessey, then brought in his six month-old Staffie, Chester, to search for the gun. Cpt Hennessey has trained Chester to locate firearms and ammunition, and on the second attempt, Chester found the gun 75 metres from the scene of the accident.
Car hijacked in Toti
A TOTI man who was assaulted and robbed of his vehicle by four men, was reunited with the car following prompt action by police.
The man was driving along Kingsway on Saturday, 9 December, at about 6pm, when he slowed down at the intersection with Umdoni Road. Four men surprised him, hit him over the head, causing him to lose consciousness. When he came to the men had dragged him out of his vehicle and started kicking him. They drove away in the car, leaving him lying in the road.
