Clean Surf makes waves

The next clean-up will take place on Saturday, 6 March from 9am to 11am.

The clean-up of Umbogintwini Beach was hosted by Clean Surf Project and received overwhelming support from the community on Saturday, 20 February. The Amanzimtoti Scouts also attended in its full force to assist with the ongoing fight against marine plastic pollution.

“Many hands make light work as bags and bags were filled within a short period,” said the organisation’s Romy Wenzel.  We are aware of the fact that interventions are necessary further upstream to stop plastic waste from entering the river and canals. However, we will continue to clean sweep the coastline to prevent plastic from entering the sea protecting marine life as best as we can.”

Special thanks to all the little eco-warriors and their parents.

“Thanks for the ongoing support from Linda Phipson from Durban Bay Clean Up as well as other community members who spared their time to clear plastic and general waste from the river mouth and beach. Thumbs up to Michael Zondi, Sphiwe Shozi and Siyabonga Cele for collecting a total of seven bulk bags and containing sorted plastic material. This was timeously collected by SW Collectors to recycle the items accordingly. We also salute Giselle’s Kitchen for offering tasty home-cooked meals at the Amanzimtoti Country Club and the ongoing sponsorship of snacks and refreshments.”

The next clean-up will take place on Saturday, 6 March from 9am to 11am. Thereafter, in celebration of Global Recycling Day and World Water Day another clean-up will be held on Saturday, 20 March at 9am to 11am at Umbogintwini Beach.  Parking is available at the Amanzimtoti Country Club, situated at 1 Golf Course Road, Athlone Park. Attendees are encouraged to carry a hat, water, shoes, gloves and sunscreen. Bin bags will be supplied. The public is urged to wear masks and ensure social distancing to comply with Covid-19 regulations.

“The big red truck, Unimog, which was sponsored by Coca Cola South Africa Beverages, is a great help to especially with transporting bags, big or small. Nevertheless, all clean-up campaigns are privately funded hence we would like to invite the public as well as businesses to join and support the upcoming clean up campaigns.”
