Clean Surf tackles plastic pollution
In celebration of Global Recycling Day and World Water Day, another clean-up will be held on Saturday, 20 March, from 9am to 11am at Umbogintwini Beach.
Bags filled to the brim with plastic waste were collected by members and volunteers of the Clean Surf Project (CSP) on Saturday, 6 March. The battle against marine plastic pollution continues as CSP with the assistance of community members embarked on yet again another clean-up at Umbogintwini Beach.
“Eight bulk bags containing sorted plastic waste were successfully filled within a short space of time. Many thanks to SW Collectors for the ongoing support by collecting the recyclables to make waste work. This gives the plastic a new life and prevents it from either washing out to sea and/ or being taken to landfill,” said the organisation’s Romy Wenzel.
“Special thanks to Far out with Malik for assisting with the clean-up, and compiling a lovely documentary which highlights the problems plastic is causing when entering our environment. Giselle’s Kitchen continues to offer much-needed refreshments and light snacks after a busy morning in the sizzling, hot sun. Thumbs up to Giselle Halse and her staff for joining the recycling campaign by sorting plastic waste and filling two bulk bags.”
In celebration of Global Recycling Day and World Water Day, another clean-up will be held on Saturday, 20 March, from 9am to 11am at Umbogintwini Beach. Parking is available at the Amanzimtoti Country Club, 1 Golf Course Road, Athlone Park. Attendees are encouraged to carry a hat, water, shoes, gloves and sunscreen. Bin bags will be supplied. The public is urged to wear masks and ensure social distancing to comply with Covid-19 regulations.
“We would like to encourage community members and businesses to support the upcoming clean-up at Umbogintwini Beach and assist Clean Surf Project, a local non-profit organisation, by expanding its clean up campaigns to keep our coastline in clean and pristine conditions.”
