Kingsway High rugby star eyes Ireland tour with national squad

A touch rugby star from Kingsway High School has the chance of a lifetime to represent the South African squad in Ireland.

A JOURNEY that began in primary school has materialised into a chance to prove himself on international soil for Njabulo Zwane, a 17-year-old touch rugby star from Kingsway High School.

The teen touch rugby phenomenon was selected for the South African TouchBoks High Performance Squad.

His proud mother, Jabulile Zwane, said that Njabulo’s dedication since primary school paid off when he made the KZN Touch Team.

“During the September school holidays, they competed in an inter-provincial tournament in Johannesburg against the best in the country. After that tournament, he received the call every young athlete dreams of, a call-up to try out for the national squad,” she said.

The team is in preparation for the Atlantic Cup in Ireland next year. To make the final South African team, he must attend four days of high-performance camps. The first two camps will be on December 5-6. Selection will be done then. Thereafter, another two camps will be held on January 16-17.

The young rugby player’s family is facing a combined cost of R7 000 to attend the camps, and will also need to cough up R67 500 for the full tour to Ireland, including flights, accommodation and the kit.

“We are a humble family from Umlazi and this amount is far beyond what we can afford alone. If he does not make it to the second set of camps, we will be refunded R3500 for the second set of camps plus any tour payments made. Njabulo trains every day after school, keeps his marks up, and dreams of representing South Africa. Touch rugby has kept him focused, disciplined, and away from the streets. Any amount will bring him closer to wearing the Protea badge,” she said.

The young touch rugby player needs support to fulfil his dreams of competing for his country. If you would like to help him pave his road to success, contact his mother, Jabulile Zwane on 084 316 7330 or email jabumkhulisi@yahoo.com.
