Girls, 9 and 10, drown in Illovo River

SAPS and Metro Search and Rescue teams were activated and the body of the second girl was recovered.

Two girls, aged nine and 10, drowned in the Illovo River on Sunday, 11 April.  Amanzimtoti SAPS received a call for assistance at Illovo River.

“It was alleged that two girls were swimming in the river and subsequently drowned. Members of the community searched for both the deceased while waiting for the police to arrive and managed to recover the body of one of the girls,” said communications officer of Amanzimtoti SAPS, Captain Charlene van der Spuy.

SAPS and Metro Search and Rescue teams were activated and the body of the second girl was recovered.

“Both the deceased were identified by their next of kin before being transported to Park Rynie Mortuary. A case of inquest was opened and is being investigated by Amanzimtoti detectives.”
