The 55km course, two-leg race, saw canoeists paddling north from Pirates Beach in Durban to Zinkwazi Beach. Burn came ninth overall at the end of the first leg and powered home to a provincial title to add to her national and world championship crowns.
“I was really glad to have some downwind conditions on the second leg after the first day’s long and hard slog. I got a pretty clean start but had to take a few waves at backline getting out but once I was out there it was everyone for themselves. I was able to link some nice runs together today and took a pretty shallow line but I didn’t see many people along the way and raced my own race today,” she said.
On the last leg, her game plan worked well as she was the first woman to finish, placing sixth overall. Burn is a two time International Canoe Federation silver medalist. She also won the Durban to Amanzimtoti Fenn SA Surfki Championship in April.
Other Toti Canoe Club members who finished are Brent Chiazzari who came in tenth overall, and Dean Chiazzari and Jayden Jansen Van Rensburg who came in sixth in the doubles. Dean said even though there were some challenges along the way, he enjoyed the race. He is already looking forward to the Sam Wyer S2 KZN Downwind Championships race which takes place on October 23 – 24.
