The park is situated on Fairway Road behind the Methodist Church. Lawrence McGregor, Mandi Pech and ward 93 councillor, Thulisile Zungu, said the idea of adding facilities the community can use came after they witnessed Athlone Park residents uniting during the riots.
“Everybody would come to this park for prayer meetings and neighbours got to know each other. We want that to continue and we want to make the park inviting for everyone and have facilities that will help bring people together,” said Pech.
The plan is to have an outdoor gym, a bicycle pump track, concrete chess boards, a pond, braai facilities and a children’s jungle gym.
“We would like the community to say what is it that they would like to have on the park because this is theirs. We are fortunate that our councillor is fully behind this initiative and has adopted it under her Operation Good Hope drive,” said McGregor.
Zungu said Operation Good Hope is fast tracking service delivery in the ward and she has already sourced some donations from the municipality to be added to the park.
“This is one part of a bigger plan to improve Athlone Park and the whole ward. Under Operation Good Hope, there has been a lot of improvement in the area, including fixing of street lights and water pipes. The streets are also being cleaned and maintained. I am promoting the general upliftment of this area. People must know that the councillor, who was said to be missing in action, is now fully in action,” said Zungu.
Pech thanked the councillor, small businesses and individuals who have made contributions towards the park. Anyone wishes to make suggestions, a donation or a contribution of any kind can contact Mandi on 083 577 2522.
