Mossel Bay: Beach-goers are spoilt for choice
Few might know that Blue Flag regulations were initially established as an environmental protection mechanism.

SOUTH Africa has some of the best beaches in the world as 48 of them were awarded full Blue Flag status for the 2020/21 season, with five of them in Mossel Bay.
The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa administers the programme domestically and hopes to achieve 100 Blue Flag-status beaches by 2030.
While Blue Flag beaches are dotted around the South African coastline, there is much to explore on Mossel Bay’s beaches:
• The Point offers rock pools to explore and swimming in the popular Poort – a rectangular strip of water between rocks. There is also a tidal pool. There is a 3km-long walkway along the coast to enjoy. You can also ride on the longest oversea cable ride in the world.
• Santos Beach, in the town centre, is one of the safest beaches for swimming. In a natural bay, the currents are not strong, the water is shallow and the waves are small.
• De Bakke Beach boasts an amphitheatre and a small, shallow cove – perfect for children who love to swim. • Dias Beach in the suburb of Dias offer many convenient amenities, including a water park, which boasts water slides, a lazy river and an indoor hot pool.

• Hartenbos Beach boasts a long boardwalk on which you can stroll and take in the beautiful sea view. You may spot flamingos and other water birds at the Hartenbos River estuary. Be sure to take your binoculars.
• Reebok/Tergniet. This beach stretches for kilometres. Many joggers and dog walkers can be seen at the beach.
• Other beaches to explore include Souwesia, Suiderkruis, Great Brak River mouth, Dana Bay, Klein Brak River and Glentana.
