A CRÈCHE at the Dakota Beach informal settlement, near Prospecton, was badly damaged by the strong winds on Thursday (November 18).

Lindokuhle crèche is housed in two containers that were donated by the Amanzimtoti Lions Club in November 2014.

Dennii Dorning, a member of the Lions, said that once the containers were set up, the club continued to make bulk food donations every two months to ensure that the children, most of whom have unemployed parents, receive nourishing meals during the day.

“The wind damaged the roof of the kitchen section and the staff cannot cook for the children in a safe place. It has been difficult because of Covid-19 as we also don’t get regular donations that we can pass on to people in need,” she said.

As the informal settlement in close proximity to the sea, Dennii believes the rust weakened the structure and made it easy for the wind to rip open.

The crèche was named after Lindokuhle Myeza, 7, who died in a fire that tore the settlement in June 2014. To make a donation, contact Dennii, via WhatsApp, on 082 443 3791 or 082 459 3542.
