South Coast Sun takes the coveted title of Newspaper of the Year
The SUN is delighted to have won the award for the second consecutive year.
FOR the second consecutive year, the South Coast SUN won the prestigious Newspaper of the Year Award. This was announced on Friday, December 2, during the second virtual awards ceremony of the Forum for Community Journalists (FCJ).
The executive director of the FCJ, Marietta Lombard, said the newspaper of the year category continues to be highly contested.
With just more than 2 040 entries, judges noted, and as expected, the three Cs (Covid,-19, crime and corruption) and the three Ss (sport, services and schools), featured prominently in most entries.

The judges added that the adjudication process again confirmed that community newspapers are still the best source of news for a specific community, the most effective platform where communities’ voices can be heard and they excel in providing details in local and relevant news.
Although last year was a very difficult year for most businesses, the judges said it was evident that journalists still went above and beyond to continue to report on pertinent news.

“This was a wonderful surprise,” said the editor of the South Coast SUN, Roelien D’Amico. “I did not expect this at all. But, as everybody knows, putting a newspaper together is a team effort. I could not have done it without any of my colleagues. “It takes hard work, long hours, motivation and dedication from each staff member, and a branch manager who believes in her staff. Thank you to all for their contribution.”

She added that, what makes this accolade so special is that when you win, you are the best in the country. “All community newspapers in the country compete for this coveted award. By winning, it means you are the best in the country. I am elated by this win.”
The FCJ is an independent, non-profit, non-racial and voluntary organisation striving to promote and express the interest of all community journalists.
