UPDATE: Truck on fire in Athlone Park

The truck was carrying a load of fridges.

A DRIVER and his assistant were lucky to escape unharmed after their truck caught fire at a Nando’s parking lot in Athlone Park on Thursday, February 17 at around 14:00.

Paul Pillay said he had stopped at Nando’s, which is on the Arbour and Oppenheimer roads intersection, to pick up a fridge.

“After stopping outside the restaurant, I noticed smoke coming out of the dashboard and it quickly got thicker,” he said.

He and his assistant used a fire extinguisher to try and out the growing blaze but were unsuccessful. By the time emergency services arrived at the scene, the cabin had already burned out, as well as the load of fridges at the back.

No one was injured in the incident.
