At the core of the Comrades Marathon is community support from the sidelines.
THE amazing support of spectators is one aspect that makes the Comrades Marathon an iconic road race.
Each year, communities come out in their numbers, lining the road along the Comrades route to cheer on their fellow countrymen and elite athletes alike.
There is no end to spectators’ pride as they encourage those athletes undertaking the gruelling 90km distance.

After two years of Covid-19 disruptions, Comrades fans were excited to get back to the sidelines this year. The Berea community showed up to support athletes as they neared the end of the down run in Durban.
Berea Mail stopped by at Tollgate Bridge and along the N3 highway to capture some of the Berea residents on the sidelines, who added to the electric atmosphere. Here are a few photos from the sidelines:
