The company’s spokesperson, Siyabonga Maphumulo, condemned the voice notes spreading these claims, labelling them as false and misleading. He emphasised that the purpose of these messages was to create unnecessary panic and confusion among the public.
“The water we provide to all our municipal customers is safe for consumption and meets the highest drinking water quality standards,” said Maphumulo.
In one of the voice notes a man claims that individuals were arrested for poisoning Midmar Dam, a key water source for uMngeni-uThukela Water. Another voice note features a woman stating that children had reported seeing people dumping poison into an unnamed dam serving the eThekwini area.
Maphumulo further clarified that all uMngeni-uThukela Water dams are securely monitored and access is strictly controlled to prevent such incidents.
