eThekwini investigates reasons behind high water demand
For months, residents have been consuming more water then the municipality can supply.

TO FIND out why the water demand far outweighs the supply to Amanzimtoti and other areas, eThekwini Municipality has deployed a team of field investigators to determine the factors contributing to the high water demand.

This team will do its work over the next seven days and this might require some supply lines to be switched off.
In a statement released on July 12, eThekwini said this was one of the interventions to restore water supply from the Wiggins Waterworks gravity system, which supplies central and southern regions of the metro. It said demand from these regions has critically reduced the storage levels at Wiggins Water Treatment Works. The field investigations will identify major leaks, bursts, and open scours along the bulk main pipeline.
“During these investigations, some reservoir inlets and critical pump stations will be temporarily shut down to reduce the high demand on the Wiggins Water Treatment Works, allowing storage levels to recover. The public is advised that these investigations are complex and time-consuming due to the extensive pipeline network and infrastructure involved. Initiatives commencing on July 12, are expected to continue for seven days or until the Wiggins storage levels are fully restored,” it said.
In the meantime, residents will be provided with water from tankers.
