The closures are required to allow excavation and foundation works as part of the ongoing interchange upgrade project. Sanral’s KwaZulu-Natal specialist geometrics engineer, Jason Lowe, said the closures will run on weekends, each scheduled from Saturday evening to early Monday morning to minimise weekday disruption.
“These works form part of the broader improvements to the interchange. The temporary closures are necessary to accommodate construction activity in a safe and controlled manner,” Lowe said.
Sanral added that full traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place to ensure safety for both motorists and construction crews. Drivers are urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and observe reduced speed limits within the construction zones.
Truck operators are encouraged to delay trips or make use of staging areas to avoid major congestion, while public transport operators should ensure their drivers are aware of the closures and alternative routes.
Scheduled closures:
• N2 Northbound to N3 Eastbound (from Amanzimtoti to Durban CBD)
Closed from 18:00 on September 6 to 04:00 on September 8.
• N2 Northbound to N3 Westbound (from Amanzimtoti to Pietermaritzburg)
Closed from 22:00 on September 6, to 06:00 on September 7
• N2 Northbound to N3 Eastbound (from Amanzimtoti to Durban CBD): Closed from 18:00 on September 20 to 04:00 on September 22.
