Head coach of the school’s canoe team, Deirdre Bentley, said they use the record times on a 2km or 4km paddle, depending on ages, to see where their fitness levels are in an effort to track improvement.

“Practice is three times a week, and we hope to have a team of paddlers who would like to compete at SA Champs in April,” said Bentley.

She added that all the children are assisted by coaches and safety officers while on the water. “Our group of paddlers is growing – at the moment we have between 13 to 15. The children have been having so much fun.

“They also have their own story to tell us at the end of each practice – like what birds they saw or how many fish jumped in front of their boat,” said Bentley.

She said with canoeing being a growing sport in schools, it gives learners a chance to compete at a national level to get their colours, which can help them obtain bursaries.
