Water supply challenges to southern areas

Ward 97 councillor André Beetge says it could still take up to 24 hours before all areas are back to full supply capacity.

A MECHANICAL failure to the main pump station that feeds 80 million litres to all areas south of Umlazi occurred on Monday afternoon, February 27. Ward 97 councillor André Beetge said this resulted in a supply shortage to areas as far south as Umkomaas and the adjacent inland areas.

“Technicians worked throughout the night to resolve the situation to the point where the pumps were restarted just after 07:00 on Tuesday morning. Given the extremely large area that was affected, it could still take up to 24 hours before all areas are back to full supply capacity,” said Beetge.

Reduced consumption by those who still have water allows the system to fill up faster.
