Tidy Towns Amanzimtoti has big plans for 2024

Tidy Towns is set to undertake various projects to uplift the area this year and relies on the community to assist.

WITH growing community support and the success of upliftment projects undertaken last year, Tidy Towns Amanzimtoti has some big plans in store for 2024.

Some of last year’s projects included the installation of two plant-filled, decorative boats at the entrance to Warner Beach, the installation of blue drum bins at Winklespruit Beach, murals, community clean-ups, daily verge maintenance and beautifying the flower beds by the Adams Road off-ramp.

Michelle Dunnett, coordinator of the community-driven project, said now it is time for a Tidy Towns explosion.

“Our focus needs to be on growing the management team. We are in need of volunteers to take up various tasks, such as our social media, fundraising and overseeing staff that will be located at each beach,” she said.

Dunnett said one of their biggest projects in mind is to revamp the Doonside area by repainting sections of the buildings and designing an interactive selfie wall for locals and holidaymakers to pose by. Some of the other upliftment ideas include revamping the ablution area and painting a beach-themed selfie wall at Winkle Beach, exploring possible spots for another donated boat and looking to appoint dedicated beach monitors at various beaches.

“Beach monitors can replace the car guards. They will have daily area-improvement tasks to do, and they will get a basic wage plus tips from the public,” she said.

Because of the litter that is constantly scattered in and around Amanzimtoti, Tidy Towns is also set for a massive bin drive.

“We have a massive litter problem. But, if there are no bins, then what are people supposed to do with their rubbish? So, we are calling for businesses to donate blue drums, and we will install them,” said Dunnett.

She added the support from the public has been phenomenal, but it is now time for businesses to get on board and get involved, either with money, time or by absorbing one of their workers into their payroll system.

“If we work together, we can achieve amazing things. We will also be increasing our efforts with eThekwini this year to see if we can assist them with the challenges they face,” said Dunnett.
