Watch: De Jager murder was motivated by millions in insurance cover – Prosecution

Werner de Jager's murder charge is classified as Schedule 6 because of its seriousness.

WERNER de Jager has arrived at the Amanzimtoti Magistrate’s Court where he will be given a chance to apply for bail.

According to the charge sheet that the SUN has seen, the state has classified De Jager’s charge as a Schedule 6 because of its seriousness. The charge sheet also states that it is seeking a life imprisonment sentence.

De Jager is accused of killing his wife, Reverend Liezel de Jager, on October 13, 2021, by strangulation. According to the charge sheet, the murder was premeditated and was motivated by insurance policies totalling R3.29 million that would pay out in the event of Liezel’s death.

“On the same day of the death of [Liezel], the applicant made an inquiry about the benefits due to him being under the deceased’s will,” reads the charge sheet.

The state has indicated it will oppose bail.
