Pump failure causes water shortage in Amanzimtoti and beyond

A large part of the south coast is without water as repairs to the Amanzimtoti Water Works facility is underway.

THE South Coast Augmentation (SCA) pipeline was compromised on December 11 and this affects the water supply to all areas south of Umlazi to Pennington.

Councillor André Beetge said no water has entered the Amanzimtoti Water Works facility since 08:00 on December 11 when the SCA pump station failed.

“Officials attempted to rectify the matter without success to the point of outsourcing at around 15:00. It serves no purpose to report water outages to various areas or suburbs as it has nothing to do with a burst or closure. It’s a matter of there being no water coming into the supply system,” said Beetge.

The affected pump station was switched off and teams arrived on site this morning (December 12) to install another pump.
Some areas around Amanzimtoti still do have water and Beetge said the deprivation had not been to the extent that it justified a deployment of water tankers yet.

“We are consistently requesting updates that will be shared as received. Where there is still water, please reduce usage to assist with recovery of the system later,” he said.
