Illovo woman’s suspected killer appears in court

It is believed the accused and the deceased dined together at an Umhlanga Rocks restaurant just before Christmas.

THE man accused of killing an Illovo township woman after they were last seen leaving an uMhlanga Rocks restaurant together in December made his first appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today (January 6).

Mfanafuthi Kunene (37) is suspected of strangling Ayabonga Mjilo (23) and burying her body in his yard at Amaotana, Inanda. They were last seen together dining in uMhlanga on December 24 and then later seen leaving together. The two worked together and Kunene was Mjilo’s manager.

During his court appearance, Kunene indicated that he would apply for a Legal Aid attorney to represent him. He is charged with murder and kidnapping.

The case was postponed to February 26 to allow for further investigations.
