Help knit or crochet blankets for the elderly
With the help of the community, the South Coast SUN aims to distribute 500 knitted blankets to the elderly.

IF you love to crochet or knit, then the Caxton Cares Square by Square Project, exclusively brought to you by South Coast SUN, is for you.
This exciting new project aims to get the community involved by knitting or crocheting 15cm by 15cm blocks, which will be sewed together to make a 90cm knee blanket for our elderly citizens. Each blanket should have 42 blocks.

“This project will not only help the elderly, but also, hopefully, give those who love to knit and crochet something worthwhile to work towards,” said editor, Roelien D’Amico. “With this in mind, we appeal for sponsorships from the community of either wool or the knitted or crochet blocks. Better yet, join us in our quest to make at least 500 blankets.”
The SUN is planning a crochet and knit workshop at the SUN office, 33 Main Road, Doonside, where the capable SUN staff member, Gerda MacGregor, will teach you the ropes.
The project is set to kick off on February 14.
“Despite my limited knowledge of knitting, and with Gerda’s guidance and expert eye, I have managed to crochet a few blocks. Not only is it fun and therapeutic, it feels really good knowing that I will be able to help some of our most vulnerable residents,” Roelien said.

“The colour or type of wool is not of importance, as long as it is 15cm by 15cm. If you choose to crochet, it should be with a 4.5cm crochet needle. We would need is at least 21 000 blocks in order to complete and donate 500 blankets.
“You are also not obliged to sew the blocks together as that massive task will be undertaken by the SUN staff,” Roelien added.
The closing date for this project is June 2, with distribution to take place in July.
To register for the workshop, call Gerda on 031 903 2341, or send an email to sunads@dbn.caxton.co.za. The workshop will start from 13:00 to 15:00 on March 1. Tea and coffee will be served.
Donated wool or blocks can be dropped off at the SUN office, 33 Main Road, Doonside, or at The Mudpie Co, 771 Marine Drive, The Bluff. Call Tilly Passmore on 069 658 8291 or Gerda MacGregor on 031 903 2341 for more information.
