Athlone Park cyclists’ accident sparks warning to motorists

Motorists are urged to take heed of the yellow cycling lane that is marked as a safe space for cyclists.

ON MARCH 10, a motorist allegedly struck three cyclists in the Athlone Park / Galleria Mall area after failing to observe the rules of the cycling lane.

Although their injuries were minor, Amanzimtoti Cycle Club chairperson Barry Walker warned of potentially severe consequences.

“Incidents like these highlight the urgent need for greater awareness and responsibility from all road users. The yellow demarcated cycling lane exists to provide a safe space for cyclists. It is not just a guideline, it is essential for their protection. Motorists must be mindful of these lanes, ensuring they do not drive or park in them, and always check for cyclists before turning or changing lanes,” said Walker.

He added that cyclists have as much right to the road as motorists and those who find themselves behind a cyclist should exercise patience.

“A few extra seconds of caution can mean the difference between life and death. Speeding past or attempting to squeeze through narrow gaps only increases the risk of accidents,” he said.
