The Highland Gathering returns to Toti
Mark your calendars for the biggest event in Amanzimtoti each year, the hotly-anticipated Highland Gathering.
IT’S BACK and it’s bigger than ever. The Highland Gathering, hosted by the Lions Club of Amanzimtoti, is transforming Hutchison Park into an extension of the Great Scottish Highland on May 2.
Humble beginnings
Over the years, it has cemented itself as a treasured cultural event, however, in the beginning, in 1964, it was organised by Betty and Clifford Leesam, as a way to raise funds for a much-needed swimming pool for Umbogintwini Primary School. It brought together the sound of bagpipes, the intensity of the Highland games and the true spirit of community.

The reins were handed to Kingsway High School before being entrusted to the Lions, who continue its legacy today. While being a small town tradition at its heart, the Highland Gathering remains one of the biggest fundraisers for the Lions of the year, helping them carry out critical outreach projects throughout the community, ranging from food parcels to supporting youth development, it ensures the community as a whole thrives.
Every ticket sold, stall booked and sponsorship secured directly impacts people’s lives and with action going on from start-to-finish, from live music, arena performances, talent shows, craft vendors and the much-anticipated main event, the mass bands performance, the event stands tall as a must-visit for locals and visitors alike.
How are pipe bands judged?
Ever wondered what judges actually listen for?
Pipe bands are judged on multiple technical elements such as tone quality, tuning, timing, expression, ensemble cohesion and overall musical interpretation.

It’s not just about playing loudly or confidently. Judges are trained to hear the smallest details, whether the drones are steady, whether the band is perfectly synchronised, whether the sound is balanced across the group.
It’s a level of listening most of us never think about. Listen closely this year, you might start hearing the difference.
