ALS Paramedics’ spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, said the accident occurred just after 16:30.

“Paramedics arrived on the scene to find chaos and carnage as the badly damaged vehicles obstructed the roadway. Paramedics found that both vehicle drivers were severely entrapped in the wreckage. Immediately, the eThekwini Municipality’s Fire Department was dispatched to assist,” said Jamieson.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to remove the drivers of both vehicles, a man and a woman, from the wreckage to allow paramedics to stabilise them. Once freed, Jamieson said they were loaded into waiting ambulances.

“Unfortunately, paramedics found a baby believed to be less than a month old had also been involved in the collision and, unfortunately, suffered major fatal injuries and was declared deceased on the scene,” he said.

The cause of the accident was not known at the time of publishing, and the police opened a docket for further investigation.
