SWEET little Lucy was rescued in Isipingo Rail by Pet Rescue Isipingo after she wandered into someone’s yard. Her health took a turn for the worse on August 1, and she was rushed to Chatsworth Animal Clinic and she tested positive for canine parvovirus.

What is canine parvovirus?

It is a highly contagious virus, mainly affecting dogs and wolves. It is spread from dog to dog by direct or indirect contact with their faeces. Vaccines can prevent the infection, but the mortality rate can reach as high as 91% if left untreated.

Lalitha Mahadow, of NPO Pet Rescue Isipingo, said Lucy, at just 11 weeks old and less than 2.5kg, is now fighting for her life and is on a life-support drip.

The NPO’s founder, Nirvana Ramlall, explained that Lucy has endured much in her short life.

“She deserves every chance to survive, but she cannot do it without our help. Today’s consultation and emergency treatment has already cost over R2000, and I simply did not have enough to cover it. This is only the beginning, as her hospitalisation and ongoing treatment will continue to increase the vet bill over the next few days. I am humbly asking for your support. Every single donation, no matter how small, will go directly towards Lucy’s veterinary care and give her the chance to pull through this devastating illness,” said Ramlall.

She implored community members to share the NPO’s post on its Facebook page and keep Lucy in their thoughts and prayers.

“Thank you to everyone who continues to stand by Pet Rescue Isipingo and the animals that depend on us. We could never do this without you,” said Ramlall.

Donations to the rescue account are eligible for a section 18A tax exemption certificate, and can be made directly to the vet account below or to Pet Rescue Isipingo.
