DESPITE the problems faced by the Durban School for the Hearing Impaired, learners and staff had a reason to smile recently after a new signboard with the school’s name was unveiled.

The signboard was donated by Amanzimtoti High School after the old one, which had also been a donation, faded. The chairperson of the school’s governing body, Nokuthula Makhanya-Sibiya, said while the school faces many hardships as a result of a lack of funds, they are focusing on the good news.

“We appreciate the sponsorship of this beautiful signboard that Amanzimtoti High School came with their team to erect. We are so proud to be associated with such schools who always want to assist. Last year we had an issue with our swimming pool and Amanzimtoti High School assisted as well. May this good working relationship continue,” said Makhanya-Sibiya.

One of the problems the school faces include the learners’ buses experiencing frequent breakdowns, leaving scores of the special needs learners stranded. Makhanya-Sibiya said the school has three buses, but at the end of the previous term, they were all out of service. The smallest of the buses came back into service on July 23.

Other problems include a lack of infrastructure maintenance because of inadequate funding from the Department of Education.
