HAIR and beauty salon owners from across Amanzimtoti came out in large numbers to attend eThekwini Municipality’s Hair and Beauty Salon Businesses Registration Programme at the Amanzimtoti Civic Centre recently.

Chairperson of eThekwini’s Informal Economy Forum, Busi Ndlovu, said the aim of the drive, which started in June, is to formalise and support one of the City’s fastest-growing sectors.

Kicking off at 09:00, the programme featured many speakers who guided hair and beauty salon owners on how to register their informal businesses and ensure compliance with City regulations and by-laws. They were also given tips on how to apply for funding and other programmes to expand their businesses.

Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, Thembo Ntuli, said the municipality is encouraged by the growing number of hair and beauty salon businesses visiting regional business licensing offices to begin the registration process after the successful workshops held in other parts of the City.

“The positive response demonstrates that salon owners recognise the importance of operating compliant businesses. Building a comprehensive database of the sector will strengthen compliance and enable the municipality to provide targeted business support that helps these businesses grow, become more sustainable, and unlock new opportunities,” said Ntuli.
