Domino’s Purity Ngcongo explained that the women were at the Doonside kitchen to receive their crèches’ supply of porridge mix after a delivery was made by the Kolisi Foundation.

“We are so grateful to the foundation for this. It’s the first of what will be a monthly donation of nutritious breakfast porridge to help tackle the issues of food insecurity and malnutrition,” said Ngcongo.

She added that data shows an alarming percentage of South African children under the age of five are malnourished in ways which could significantly affect their physical and mental development as they grow.

“Regular nutritious breakfasts positively affect children’s learning and general school performance. The Kolisi Foundation’s commitment means that 500 pre-schoolers in these crèches have a healthy meal to start each day,” she said.

Both foundations are committed to seeing communities in South Africa find relief, empowerment and justice and would be pleased to hear from anyone wanting to know more about making a difference in the country.

Zethu Biyase of Happy Day ECD centre said she and the others were happy that the porridge does not contain a lot of sugar.

“This is so much better for our children,” said Biyase.
