eThekwini on high alert after weather warning
Damaging winds of up to 90km/h are expected to rock eThekwini and residents are urged to avoid travel where possible.
ETHEKWINI Municipality’s Disaster Management and emergency services team are on high alert following an impact-based warning issued by the SA Weather Service (SAWS), which predicts that damaging winds of up to 90km/h will rock the city today (September 4).

The SAWS forecast indicates that a ridging high-pressure system supported by an upper cut-off low-pressure system is expected to produce average wind speeds between 30-40km/h, gusting up to 90km/h along the coast and interior.
“The strong winds pose a risk of damage to infrastructure and settlements, disruption to small harbours and coastal activities, falling trees affecting roads and travel, and injury or danger to life from flying debris. The Municipality is urging residents, particularly motorists, to exercise extreme caution,” read a statement by eThekwini Municipality.
Emergency response units are on standby to respond rapidly to any incidents.
How to stay safe during the winds
- Motorists are urged to be mindful of cross-winds, especially on high-level or exposed routes. Reduce speed where visibility of vehicle stability may be compromised.
- Residents are advised to secure loose objects and outdoor structures.
- Steer clear of trees and overhead power lines.
- Avoid unnecessary travel.
- Refrain from coastal and harbour activities.
- Boat owners should seek shelter for their vessels.
“The City will continue to closely monitor areas particularly vulnerable to wind damage, including coastal precincts and informal settlements, to ensure a rapid, co-ordinated response,” read the statement.
Residents are urged to report storm-related incidents or emergencies to The City’s Disaster Management Centre, available 24 hours a day, on 031 361 0000.
