ETHEKWINI Municipality has called for vigilance following a Level 2 warning from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) about strong, damaging winds today (September 14).

The warning was issued for parts of KwaZulu-Natal, including eThekwini, and will remain in effect from 08:00 to 23:59.

Saws said a strong high-pressure system is expected to generate strong northerly to north-easterly winds, reaching average speeds of 35 to 40km/h with gusts of up to 80km/h.

Potential impacts

• Maritime operations: Disrupted port and small-harbour activities, difficult navigation, and an increased risk of small vessels taking on water or capsizing.
• Coastal and land areas: Disrupted beachfront activities and potential localised structural damage to both formal and informal settlements.

Safety Precautions
• Residents: Secure loose outdoor items, exercise caution outdoors, and remain alert to changing weather conditions.
• Motorists: Drive with extreme care, particularly on exposed routes and high-sided vehicles.
• Beachgoers and coastal users: Avoid high-risk shoreline activities and strictly follow all maritime safety warnings.

Municipal emergency response teams are on high alert to clear fallen trees, remove debris, unblock stormwater infrastructure, and render immediate assistance to affected communities. In the event of an emergency, contact the City’s Disaster Management Centre on 031 361 0000.
