SAWS issued a Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms, valid from 13:00 until 23:59, and a Level 2 warning for damaging winds from 11:00 until 06:59 on October 20.

Heavy downpours, excessive lightning, possible hail, and southerly winds reaching up to 83km/h are expected, posing risks of localised flooding, structural damage, and hazardous driving conditions.

Emergency response personnel are on high alert and the Durban metro police service will monitor flood-prone areas to manage traffic and close unsafe roads.

  • Do not drive or walk through flooded roads or fast-flowing bodies of water.
  • Make sure loose outdoor items are secured and valuables are moved above expected flood levels.
  • Steer clear from beaches, rivers, and the shoreline.
  • Stay indoors away from windows during lightning and unplug electrical appliances.
