UGC caddy posts competition win
Saturday’s Toyota Halfway Malanda monthly medal was much better and more conducive for golf weather-wise, which the players appreciated.

THE rain this past week has done a tremendous amount of good on Umkomaas Golf Club course, leaving the fairways, greens and even the rough 'bits' looking absolutely stunning once again.
The timing of the Spring treatment couldn’t have been more perfect.
Accolades to the green keeping staff on a job well done.
Wednesday’s competition was almost a complete wash-out except for the four intrepid players, Rob Finlay, Jimmy Spear, Eric Morsner and Mike Cromhout who braved the weather. The scribe is not too sure how far they got with their game but they were determined to play, heading out with “it never rains on a golf course” adage. Well, here’s an update guys, it does rain on a golf course and hopefully none of you have a cold or flu as a result.

It was nice to see Andy Davidge back after his long holiday in the UK, walking the fairways as one of the 47,000 spectators on one of the days at Gleneagles during the Ryder Cup. It was very exciting and will surely be on every golfers bucket list.
The Naickers, one in each generation, were in the prizes this month – starting with the A division, the winner on 67 was Dean Naicker with Bruce Sutcliffe taking 2nd place on 70. In the B division, it was Tom Naicker in first place, who slipped in on 67 to take it from second placed Jimmy Spear on 68. The C division, always a hotly contested division, was won by John Gillett with a 67, with young Tash Naicker in second spot on a 69. The women also played medal for the Sutcliffe Glass with the winner being Michelle van der Westhuizen with a 73. Incidentally she is playing terrific golf at the moment which augurs well for inter club later this month. In second place is Sabiha Bacaus on a 74, counting out Michelle van der Merwe also on 74.
Michelle van der Merwe won the least putts compo with 32 putts. The jackpot was shared between Brian Daventry-Bull and John Gillett, both with 11 points and Brian Daventry-Bull won the huge kitty for the hidden birdie, which was found on the 15th hole. Well done to Val Hazell for scooping the attendance draw. Congratulations to all the winners, not forgetting all the other players who played medal this month. There are only a couple of months left to make up your scores for the “101 hole” competition – you need five scores to qualify for the prize.
One of the woman members, Sabiha Bacaus, will be having a busy month in October since she has been invited to play in the Pro Am Premier Challenge golf tournament on 15 October at San Lameer, which is played the day before the actual LPGA SA Women's Open Championship starts. Then she is off to Sun City to play in the finals of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge on 20 and 21 October before she heads home to play inter club for Umkomaas at Amanzimtoti Golf Club on 23 October. Good Luck, Sabiha from all at the club.

Lindane Mthiyane, a UGC member, a sometimes caddy and assistant coach to Devlyn Fraser on a Saturday morning at KidzGolf, played in the KZN caddies championships sponsored by Calloway and Marshall on Monday at Beachwood Golf Club. He won the championship by shooting one under for the day. According to Lindane, the field was quite big this year, so many congratulations to him on this wonderful achievement.
