A SPECIAL announcement was made at the monthly meeting last Saturday, the committee decided that all golfing youngsters under the age of 21 may play a complete round of golf (18 holes) at Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC), seven days a week for a mere R20.

Golfers must confirm with their IDs at the golf shop and call the club for more info on this ‘special’ on 039-973-1042.

All golfing youngsters are welcome to make use of this special during the holidays or until further notice.

Wednesday’s individual stableford was very well supported by both members and visitors alike. Visitors Dennis White, Ann Crossley, Rudi van Blerk, Raymond Ntombela, Bob Duncan and former members Johan and son, Robert Roux were welcomed by club captain, Peter Toward at prize-giving. UGC also welcomed members from Bluff National Park Golf Club, Kenneth Commins, Mornay Pretorius, Darryl Ribbink and Trix van Rensburg to the competition. Great to see one of the younger members, Keegan Redfern playing with his dad, Craig and welcome back to Ken Harding who took a ‘sabbatical’ away from golf for a few months. There was a count out for first, second and third places this week and taking first prize was Dave Kemp, followed by Kenneth Commins from the Bluff in second place and finally Sierd Lamminga took third spot, all on 37 points. Michelle van der Merwe helped herself to fourth place on 36 points with Andy Davidge taking the last prize in fifth place, counting out Ken Harding and Garth Wilyman, all on 35 points.

Saturday’s Toyota monthly medal was pretty well supported considering quite a few members were playing either Composite League or SCR women’s club league on Sunday. Visitors Gary Ninow, Derek Jordan, Richard Thompson, Dennis White and Ann Crossley were warmly welcomed.

The winners are as follows: A division was won by Mike Cromhout on a stupendous 64 followed by Saga Reddy on 69. The B division was won by Nelson Moonsamy on a good 66 with Dave Kemp right behind him with 70. The ever-popular C division was convincingly won by Graham Coxell on an excellent 65, seven shots better than his nearest rival, Bing Opie on 72.

The women also had a good day, especially Annette Gillett who took the winners’ glass this month on a 72 followed very closely by Michelle van der Merwe in second place with 73. Michelle also took the least putts prize with only 31 putts for her round. The jackpot was won by Graham Coxell with 11 points and Dave Kemp took home the hidden birdie prize which was found on the short 13th hole. Only two two-clubs were had on Saturday, Bruce Sutcliffe on the fourth and Nelson Moonsamy on the 17th. The attendance draw will be carried over to next week. Well done to Annabelle Hesom on her win in the football sweep with Braintree FC. The club also had its annual ‘Durban July’ Sweep and the club won with Power King. Patricia Thompson had second placed Pinto Arise and Ann Crossley took the third prize. Well done and congratulations to all winners.

As mentioned, quite a few members played various leagues on Sunday. The women played their SCR league at UGC with home course advantage. Lesa Vergottini, Denise Nell, Linda Toward and Michelle van der Merwe all won their games. Unfortunately Annette and Sabiha lost. Umkomaas still defeated Southbroom’s women 4 and 2. The composite team, away at Selborne, also played very well against Royal Durban and Selborne with the UGC team coming out on top and beating both Royal and Selborne into second and third places respectively.

Next Saturday, 11 July is the fourball better ball competition and on Sunday, 12 July is a combined Khanya Hospice and mixed foursomes competition. Contact Annette Gillett on 082-927-5013 to book a time for Sunday.

The ‘Gerry Hatricks’ play on Tuesdays and Fridays at 7am for 7.15am tee off. They would love you to join them and your contacts are Graham on 083-325-5705 and Keith on 083-305-5740.

Six pin on Friday afternoons is still popular, starting at around 3pm. Go down and unwind after a hectic day at the office.
