THE first-ever Valentine’s Day challenge went off very well at Toti Bowling Club, with lots of cheers and applause from those enjoying the cool breeze on the veranda on that hot afternoon.

The men were victorious in 11 of the 19 games played, and Doreen Salmond won the prize for the closest prediction of the winners, getting 17 right.

At the end of the 4th round of the Hypersure mixed trips, the leading teams have changed positions. Mike Groom had a blistering game and helped his team of Jeanne Alexander and Neville Roscoe, to move up from third to first place. Still holding onto second place are Barbara Beamson, Marion Crouch and Mike Pitchers. Doreen Salmond, with Doug and Lynn Joubert have now moved down to third spot, and the weekly chocolate draw went to Lynn Joubert. Next week will see the field break into two groups for the last two rounds of the game, competing for separate prizes.

In two men’s finals played last weekend, Vince Marriot, Terry Morgan, Alf Bingham and Trevor Zulch are now the men’s drawn fours champions, after defeating Dave Gardner, Adie Fuller, Bobby Henderson and Ian McDonald. Greg McLeod, Doug Joubert and Mike Pitchers defeated Lofty van Tonder, Ian Crouch and Barry Bush to become the new nominated trips champs. Well done to all.

In nominated mixed pairs round two, Peter Callaghan and Robyn Hutton lost to Val de Kok and Boet Els, and Kathy Cox and Vince Phaal lost to Alec and Nicky Stirzaker. In round three games, Les Brown and Talla Stephens-Viviers defeated Pam Chalder-Royle and Andy Walker; Glen Scorgie and Jackie Holdrick had a win against Paul and Jeannette Els and Pete Shepard and Amanda Ninow lost to Martin and Elmarie Young.

Round one of men’s drawn pairs saw Glen Scorgie and Mike Pitchers defeat Gustav Somers and William Sithole; Vince Marriott and Andy Jones lost to Lofty van Tonder and Wessie van der Westhuizen; Gerald Chalder-Royle and Dave McMillan lost to Colin Coetzee and Bobby Henderson; Al McGregor and Kokkie de Kock beat Coy Schrauwen and Trevor Zulch; and Les Brown and Pete Shepard beat Robbie Roberts and Leon van Rensburg.

In the only round two game of men’s drawn pairs played, Ian Crouch showed his return to form when he and Phil Perkins defeated Terry Morgan and Barry Buckland.

Women’s drawn pairs also got underway at the weekend with six games being played. In a very close game, Nita Meumann and Talla Stephens-Viviers managed to defeat Barbara Beamson and Maggie Robertson; Doreen Salmond and Nicky Stirzaker had a good game, defeating Denise Bingham and Maureen Griffin.

Robyn Hutton and Jackie Holdrick won against Heather Brown and Linda McGregor; Jeanne Alexander and Joan van Rensburg lost to Jacqui Fouché and Margaret van Belkum; Michelle Pitchers and Karen Shepherd lost to Val de Kok and Leonie Mills; and Elsie Walker and Vera Broskie defeated Jenny Delport and Elmarie Young.

At TGIF the 100 board was won by the ‘Damagers’. As Betty Sawyer was not present, the attendance draw prize rises to R600 next week. Alan Foster’s number came out in the key draw, but he was unable to choose the right key from the 27 that were left, so the pot rises to a massive R9,560 next time.

As Terry Morgan is now back, he was presented with the member of the month award for December for all his hard work in the club gardens.

Entries for the club women’s open singles closes on 19 February, and entry fees should also be paid by then. PN membership cards can now be collected from either Maureen van der Poel or Talla.

Birthday members for this week are Gerald Gordon-Hughes and Denise Bingham. Best wishes go to them and to all past and present members who are not in the best of health. Finally, good bowling to all members playing in the PN trips this coming weekend.
