Good start to women’s bowls league

Note that the club kitchen/brunchies will be closed on the public holidays on Wednesday, 27 April and Monday, 2 May.

THE second day of the PN mixed pairs (Oppenheimer), which is sponsored by Amanzimtoti Bowling Club and Acacia Operations Services, was played in ideal weather last Sunday and spectators at clubs around the district were treated to a display of top class bowls.

Ian Crouch and Denise Bingham were disappointed when they lost by one shot on the 22nd end, playing against a Durban team.

Robyn Hutton and Peter Callaghan managed to come from behind to win their game, so they go through to the last 16, as will Greg McLeod and Marion Crouch who go through by default on technical grounds. Both teams will play at Toti club next Sunday morning, 24 April.

Thanks must go to Hettie van Niekerk for umpiring the mixed pairs tournament, and to the two competition secretaries, Brian Crause and Vera Broskie for their untiring work behind the scenes to ensure the competitions runs smoothly.

The team of Doreen Salmond, Marion Crouch, Nita Meumann and Adrienne Robbins have also been keeping the Toti flag flying high at the women’s mid-week league. They were last year’s plate winners, and this year they are off to a good start, having won three games in a row. The club wished them well for their next game which was on 20 April and for the rest of the tournament.

The men’s inter-club league has started, and three of the six teams won their games. First division won 6-1 against Umhlanga A; second division won 6-1 against Northlands A; third division lost 0-7 to Ridley Park A; fifth division lost 2-3 to Northlands B; and seventh division E lost 0-5 to Toti seventh division F.

In first round men’s handicap singles Dave McMillan beat John Hewgill; and in second round men’s open singles Barry Buckland beat Al McGregor.

At TGIF the ‘Damagers’ won the 100 board and social member Brendon Meintjies would have won the attendance draw, but as he was not present the pot will be a must-win of R1,000 next week. Greg and Gwyn McLeod’s number came out in the key draw, but as they couldn’t find the right key, the jackpot rises to R3,980 next time.

The list is on the board for the mixed 2-42- to be held on Friday, 22 April, and if you are looking for a partner, put your name down as available or contact Duncan Wright.

There are also mid-week cardings on the board for women’s senior and open singles, and there is still space for more players for potjie day on 1 May and for women’s inter-club league which starts on 4 June. Support these events.

Note that the club kitchen/brunchies will be closed on the public holidays on Wednesday, 27 April and Monday, 2 May. Birthday wishes go to Sue Blount, Yvonne Hooper, Keith Berry, Jeanne Alexander, Cally Boyd, Michelle Pitchers and Julie Sutherland, and a speedy recovery to past and present members who are not well, especially Maggie Robertson who is recovering from a hip op.
