Monica makes waves at SSA regional swim champs

Ten-year-old Monica requested special permission from SSA to compete in Germiston.

Amanzimtoti swimming sensation, Monica Botha claimed a silver and two bronze medals at the northern region’s Swimming South Africa (SSA) regional championships from 31 March to 2 April.

The champs took place at the Dellville pool in Germiston, Gauteng at an altitude of 1,640 metres, which is a challenge to coastal swimmers.

Ten-year-old Monica requested special permission from SSA to compete in Germiston rather than the allocated Sasolburg pool in the northern regions versus eastern regions champs.

Despite the difference in altitude and suffering from an inflamed and swollen triceps, which affected her butterfly and breaststroke, Monica did not disappoint.

Results:

  • Girls 10 and under 100 LCM freestyle – 1.12.48 (personal best and bronze medal);
  • girls 10 and under 200 LCM freestyle – 2.36.65 (personal best and silver medal);
  • girls 10 and under 200 LCM backstroke – 3.01.48 (personal best and bronze).
