Pete Callaghan must have been on a winning streak last week as he and his team won the Food Lovers’ Big Chicks.

AMANZIMTOTI Bowling Club’s greens were humming at the weekend, as bowlers caught up on lost game time resulting from disruptions to the schedule caused by the heavy rain last week.
In a hard-fought semi-final of the women’s handicap singles, which saw the scores on peels five times, Amanda Ninow eventually trumped Maggie Robertson.
The women’s drawn pairs quarter-finals were also close games. Marion Crouch and Talla Stephens-Viviers beat Jeannette Els and Michelle Pitchers; Lynn Joubert and Amanda Ninow defeated Elmarie Young and Linda McGregor, and Heather Brown and Adrienne Robbins beat Barbara Beamson and Leonie Mills.
In women’s drawn trips round two Robyn Hutton, Nicky Stirzaker and Lesley Stephens-Viviers beat Jeanne Alexander, Denise Bingham and Marie van der Walt.
Dean Cooper was the winner in his novice singles game against Martin Birch, and Andy Jones defeated Greg Veldtman. In men’s handicap singles Alec Stirzaker beat Mike Roberts, and Wessie van der Westhuizen lost to Greg McLeod.
Men’s nominated pairs kicked off with 10 games being played. Graham Ellis and Barry Buckland beat Clive Frank and Terry Morgan; Greg McLeod and Doug Joubert beat Glen Scorgie and Mike Pitchers; Boet Els and Dave McMillan beat Coy Schrauwen and Ben Venter. Lofty van Tonder and Barry Bush beat Vince Marriott and Eric Klopper; Pete Shepard and Jeff van Belkum beat Tony Cam and Alan McGregor; Vince Phaal and Brad Cox beat Mark Brodie and Les Brown; Ian Crouch and Alec Stirzaker beat Greg Veldtman and Dean Cooper; Peter Callaghan and Dallas Davis beat John Hewgill and Mike Roberts.
Alf Bingham and Trevor Zulch beat Keith West and Steve Woor, and Dennis Hughes and Gustav Somers conceded to Ken Leech and Wessie van der Westhuizen. In men’s open singles Gustav Somers also conceded a win to Linden Cooper.
Ian Crouch and Lofty van Tonder won the men’s 2-4-2. Father and son combo Brad and Brian Cox were runners-up, with Glen Scorgie and Peter Callaghan taking second session.
Pete Callaghan must have been on a winning streak last week as he and his team of Clive Frank, Shane Tocher and Denise Bingham won the Food Lovers’ Big Chicks. Second place went to Ian Crouch, Lofty van Tonder, Marion Crouch and Julie Sutherland. Greg McLeod, Doug and Lynn Joubert and Mike Pitchers were third.
Alf Bingham, Barry Buckland, Chris van der Westhuizen and Maggie Robertson won the lucky 13th prize, and Barry Simpson, John Hewgill, Keith West and Gladys Hughes had most bowls. Second session went to Adie Fuller, Vish Studinski, Guelfo Cobianchi and Karen Shepherd.
Many thanks to generous sponsors Food Lovers’ Market Scottburgh, Brian Pascoe and Vince Marriott and to Dave Gardner for faithfully organising this event for so many years.
Unfortunately Ian ‘SuperMac’ McDonald didn’t have super luck at the TGIF key kraw, so the pot rises to R2,740 this week. Maggie Robertson won the 100 board, but Barry Bush wasn’t present to win the attendance draw, so it’s up to R800.
A reminder that the muttons will be played on Sunday, 28 May, so ensure teams are in order. Birthday greetings go to Neil Wiggill, Bill Streek and Liz Morgan-Davies. Good wishes to all who are house-bound due to sickness, operations or injuries.
