Winkle SLC flies its flag in busy competition season

SA nipper champs were held in Port Elizabeth, the sea was not friendly and many sea events were not completed.

THE past six weeks or so has been a busy period for all Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club (SLC) members with competitions being the order of the day.

SA senior and junior champs were held in Cape Town, with the seniors finishing ninth and the juniors 15th overall.

What really great achievements.

Medal winners were Kelly Fell – second U17 flags, third U17 beach sprint and second open women’s beach sprint. The women’s beach relay team achieved a third place. Well done to Kelly, Dana Erasmus, Brittney Luther and Tyler Main. The feedback received indicates this was a great trip.

SA nipper champs were held in Port Elizabeth, in an unfriendly sea and as such, many sea events were not completed. Winkle SLC nippers certainly did well in the beach events, with Jade Erasmus second in U13 beach sprint, Dylan Barber second in U11 beach run and Keith Ward first in U10 beach flags. All of them won medals. Due to the number of events not completed, there were no overall team results. The parents enjoyed the trip with many laughs later in the evenings.

Last weekend the KZN South nipper champs were completed at Warners with many children achieving medals in trying surf conditions. The number of medal winners is too long to list but mention must be made of Jenna Nel U14, Dylan Barber U11 and Keith Ward U10 who were the top competitors in their respective age groups. Well done to all who competed. Well done to Warners for hosting the competition.

This past weekend also saw 14 Winkle nippers pass their nipper exams in preparation for next season. Many thanks to examiner Derek Fourie for giving up his time to test the candidates.

This weekend Winkle SLC has its annual prize-giving at Bazley Beach, which promises to be another great occasion.
