Winklespruit lifesaver gears up for international surf rescue challenge

The Winklespruit lifesaver will travel to Mount Maunganui, Tauranga where she will compete to make her country proud.

KELLY Fell of Winklespruit Lifesaving Club has been selected to represent her country at the International Surf Rescue Challenge in New Zealand from 30 November to 3 December.

The Winklespruit lifesaver will travel to Mount Maunganui, Tauranga where she will compete to make her country proud.

Kelly (16) went to Amanzimtoti Primary School and now attends Epworth High School. The sportswoman has been involved in lifesaving from the tender age of eight, and has only grown in skill as the years progressed.

“I will represent my country in the beach sprint and flags events,” said Kelly.

Initially taking up nippers to build her confidence in the sea, Kelly now feels both honoured and grateful to have the opportunity to represent her country in something she has such a passion for.

To make the South African team has been the sportswoman’s dream for years.

Kelly explained her reason for enjoying lifesaving: “I love being able to help those in need and the ability lifesaving gives me to make a difference in my community,” she said.

Aside from lifesaving, Kelly is an avid athlete and represented KZN in the sport. She also participates in swimming, squash and mountain biking and enjoys dancing and art.

“I would like to encourage all young people to join a lifesaving club,” said Kelly. “This is the place where you’re able to have fun on the beach while learning safety at the same time.”

Kelly thanked her parents for all their support and all those who have passed on their knowledge of the sport on to her.
