ATHLETIC prowess was on full display as young track and field athletes took on their peers for this year’s interschool athletics, hosted by Umbogintwini Primary School at Kuswag Skool on September 15 and 21.

Sports department head and organiser of the event, Elzaan Kruger, said that the two-day event provided a platform for prospective athletes to test themselves against their peers.

“There were impressive performances across both track and field events, from determined finishes on the track to personal bests on the field. Learners demonstrated the commitment and hard work that goes into competing. While the results and medals formed an important part of the day, the event offered much more than a competition. The stands and sidelines were filled with encouragement as athletes supported competitors from other schools, while coaches and teachers celebrated every effort,” said Kruger.

She said that whether they competed for a spot on the podium or strived to improve upon previous performances, every learner had an opportunity to be a part of something special.

“The event also served as a reminder of the important role school sport plays in developing young people. Athletics teaches discipline, perseverance and resilience, while creating opportunities for learners to form friendships and build confidence beyond the classroom. Umbogintwini Primary School expressed its sincere appreciation to Kuswag Skool for allowing the event to make use of its excellent facilities,” said Kruger.
