Alaska adds opera to her list of talents

Toti songstress, Alaska Hilton is hard at work, rehearsing for the ‘Queens of the Opera: Valentine is such a Drag’ show, starting Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo on Friday, 13 February.

 
Although only 12-years-old, the talented Amanzimtoti Primary School grade 7 pupil has been singing and dancing for many years and has already appeared on stage in ‘Annie’, ‘Glee Show’ and ‘Tribute to Disney’, participated in the Gateway To Fame auditions and was awarded first place in her age group at the Talent Africa regional competition. She will compete at the finals in March in Johannesburg.

 
“I love being on stage and entertaining people,” said Alaska.

 
In Valentine is such a Drag, I sing solo and duets with (Idols top 35 contestant) Krystle Temmerman.

 
I love the lights, audience, costumes, make-up and the attention.

 
I would like to continue acting after school and would love to be in one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s productions.”

 
Alaska has to juggle her schoolwork with all the rehearsals she has to attend. “I have a lot of support from my mom. She helps me with homework and studies. There is very little time for school work, but I do manage to do everything and I do very well at school, which is very important.

 
I am in the school choir. I also do drama and I have a lead role in my upcoming school play ‘Aladdin’, where I play Jasmine.
Valentine is such a Drag is a balance between comedy and serious opera singing.

 
Allan Quihampton, Derek Pearce, Greg Baptie and Roland Stansell of the Family Players do the comedy side, and Krystle and I sing the opera.

 
It is a really hilarious show that everyone will enjoy and it will be a great way to spend your Valentine’s Day.”
